The AAU Girls Basketball Program is organized to initiate, stimulate and improve opportunities for amateur girls basketball competition at both the local and national level. Girls ages 9-18 play nationwide on over 600 teams in 9 age- group divisions. The teams compete for to qualify for the AAU National Championship Tournament and the National Invitational Championships. Teams in the Metropolitan Association (New York City and the surrounding region) compete in tournaments, usually held on weekends, in and around the New York area and the East Coast region throughout the season. There are dozens of AAU affiliated girls basketball teams in the New York City area. Each team organizes its own tryouts and tournament schedule.
