Beacon Programs
212-676-8255
Beacons are school-based Community Centers currently operating
in all New York City Neighborhoods, at least one in each Community
School District. Located in Intermediary and/or Elementary
schools and one High School, the Beacon programs address the
increasingly critical need for young people to have safe,
structured environments in the hours in which they are not
in school. The Beacon programs also recognize the importance
of strengthening schools as cornerstones of stability and
opportunity in these neighborhoods.
Beacon schools offer children, youth and adults a mix of social
services, recreation, educational and vocational activities,
health education and referrals and the opportunity for community
meetings and social activities. The Beacons offer youth the
opportunity to develop a sense of social connection through
participation in positive group activities ranging from sports
and drama groups to entrepreneurial training and community
service. Managed by community-based organizations (CBOs),
the Beacons employ a neighborhood approach to providing services
so that the specific combination of services and activities
at any Beacon uniquely responds to neighborhood needs and
interests. The following Beacon Programs are located in Queens:
