PowerPlay NYC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to increasing the participation of girls in sports and fitness activities. Created in 1998 motivated by the knowledge that girls who participate in sports have higher self-esteem, a more positive body image and are more likely to get better grades, PowerPlay NYC provides extensive resources and programs to girls ages 7 – 18 designed to educate girls on and off the field of play.
Girls in the five boroughs of New York City have been left on the sidelines and while participation in sports continues to increase, girls still make up less than half of the participants in school and neighborhood sports programs. And because of issues such as lack of support and fewer female coaches and role models, girls tend to drop out of sports programs at a rate more than double that of boys.
PowerPlay NYC believes sports are especially important for girls because they learn lessons on the field – teamwork, competition, risk-taking, time management, etc. – that they may not otherwise learn. And sports provide girls with the opportunity to build the self-confidence they’ll need to succeed in all areas of life.
