Caitlin H: Running to help girls find their voice

Crazy that August is upon us and the glorious NYC Marathon only 4 months away! Our team is training like mad, even in this hot summer heat. Each runner is not only passionate about running, they’re in it to win it for our girls. We asked marathoner Caitlin Hyduke’s reason for supporting PowerPlay’s mission and the thousands of girls we serve across NYC. Read on for her reason, close to her heart and propelling her forward step by step.

I think the biggest obstacle facing young girls today is in finding their voice. I was fortunate enough to have strong female role models, to include my own mother. I was also fortunate to have men, such as my dad, stand up for equal treatment of young girls and boys in ways such as writing letters to our local newspaper regarding the unequal press coverage of high school boy and girl athletics. Without these role models as my foundation though, it would have been more difficult for me to find my strong voice, and not all young girls are as fortunate. Hopefully, with programs such as PowerPlay NYC and other similar initiatives nationwide, young girls can on a whole begin to overcome this obstacle from a young age, and continue to pay it forward to future generations of strong girls!

You can support Caitlin’s mission and the PowerPlay girls here today by donating to her profile! And be sure to keep your eyes on our page for information on how to cheer her on during the big day this fall.
