Meet our PowerPlay team members in the TCS New York City Marathon!

Organizations are only as good as the community they rest upon. Fortunately for PowerPlay, ours is a solid, dedicated, passionate community. This year once again, we have a team running and raising funds on behalf of our girls in the TCS New York City Marathon. Meet one of our members, Edward Davey here as he talks a little bit about his connection to our mission and what sports means to his life.

“As a child athlete I often wondered why there were so many more teams, leagues and opportunities for boys to play sports compared to girls — even my own sister had fewer opportunities than I did.  When I became an adult, a public school teacher and a high school sports coach I was glad to learn that there were more opportunities for girls to be involved in athletics. Still the opportunities and interest did not quite match the boys programs.  Later, as a parent of both a boy and a girl, I was determined to have both my children afforded the chance to enjoy the benefits of playing sports. From making friends, learning sportsmanship, maintaining health and learning the positives of competition – I greatly value the chances my kids have to play their basketball games, tennis matches, soccer games and more.  Their experiences are a great part of their identity and a part of our family bonding.

When my friend shared with me her commitment to join PowerPlay in order to help bring athletic experiences to underprivileged girls, my wife and I quickly began to support the program.  PowerPlay values so many of the same ideals that I do.  I am glad to join PowerPlay’s team in fundraising through the running of the 2016 TCS New York Marathon.  I am so excited to do something athletic in order to help PowerPlay continue to achieve their goals.  It is a great match; I hope to both help fundraise and to be a athletic role model for my daughter, girls I teach in the public school system and to the girls who benefit from the great work done by the people at PowerPlay. I look forward to running in November and to seeing more girls at the starting line in future races!”

It’s community members like Edward who help PowerPlay live up to our mission of improving girls’ lives and making them physically, emotionally and academically stronger. You can add meaning to his miles and help us change lives by donating today.
