Tasmine Lester

Tasmine is a rising sophomore who was a superstar in our Academy last summer. She’s come full circle now and this summer is one of our wonderful interns. Here she talks about her experience last year and sheds some light on what she sees in her future.

“PowerPlay was a very interesting experience for me, being one of the youngest girls in the program last year. I was one of five girls going into freshman year, so I felt behind in that aspect. Almost all 45 other girls already had an idea of what they want to major in, or what college they want to go to. At first, surrounding myself with them was difficult and scary. As time went on, tried not to think of the other girls as intimidating, but people with more experience that I can learn from. The advice I got from other SSLAers and coaches about going into freshman year and getting ready for college was personalized and more effective than any other book or website on the topic. In addition, PowerPlay gave me opportunities that are normally not given to freshmen such as going on college tours in and out of state. While interning at PowerPlay, I intend to get out of my comfort zone and gain leadership skills.”

Be sure to follow Tasmine and the rest of the Leadership Academy this summer on our social media pages – facebook, twitter, snapchat and instagram – all handles are PowerPlayNYC.
