Reports To: President & CEO

Job Description:

The Director of Finance and Accounting will oversee the financial reporting and accounting functions at PowerPlay. Reporting to the President & CEO, this position will direct all financial activities including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, payroll, audit prep, insurance and tax reports and planning and adherence to fiscal policies and procedures.


Fiscal Duties:

  • Maintains budget-to-actual analysis by revenue class
  • Performs the month-end accounting close process (bank reconciliation, accruals, manage all sub ledgers for A/P and A/R0
  • Appraises the organization’s financial position and generates and presents monthly fiscal reports to the President & CEO and Board Finance Committee
    Including: Revenue and expense, cash position and variances against budget
  • Meets quarterly with the Board and discusses any Finance
    related matters
  • Prepares annual budget and multi-year strategic plan financial data in coordination with CEO, Board Chair and Board
  • Finance Committee
  • Reviews overall accounting/financial information to challenge budget and actual amounts with team
  • Updates budget/forecast, as needed, quarterly
  • Formulates, recommends and implements sound fiscal policies, procedures and accounting controls
  • Ensures adherence to internal fiscal quality control systems throughout the agency (an internal audit, efficiency role)
  • Assists with the resolution of all issues, disputes and requests involving tax and reporting issues with the IRS
  • Additional financial analyses and hands-on bookkeeping duties
    as necessary

Grants Compliance Duties:

  • Works with the President & CEO and Development & Database Coordinator to ensure that fiscal requirements for grants and contracts are identified, realized and monitored
  • Provides guidance to the Development staff in the preparation of periodic reports to funding sources
  • Oversees the reporting of outstanding funding receivables, on a grant-by-grant basis
  • Supervises the monitoring of all contracts to ensure compliance with fiscal and programmatic reporting

Audit Related:

  • Works closely with auditors and the Board Audit Committee on completion of the annual, agency-wide audit
  • Prepares supporting schedules as necessaryJob Type: Part-time


  • 8+ years of finance and/or accounting experience
  • Knowledge of Quickbooks
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical budget and financial information to the Board and PowerPlay NYC staff
  • Dedicated to organizational mission and an interest in acting as a change agent
  • Self-starter, ability to work independently
  • Analytical mindset
  • Strategic thinker
  • CPA (a plus)

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of experience:

  • Bookkeeping (journal entries, monthly close) 3 years
  • Budgeting – 3 years
  • Presenting to and interacting with Board of Directors – 2 years
  • Accounting & Finance – 8 years
  • Not-for-profit – 2 years
