Reports To: President and CEO

Job Description:

The Director of Finance and Accounting will oversee the financial reporting and accounting functions at PowerPlay NYC. Reporting to the President & CEO, this position will oversee all financial activities including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, payroll, audit prep, insurance and tax reports and planning and adherence to fiscal policies and procedures. Also, this position will ensure all business and financial operations are optimized and function efficiently.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Own all of PowerPlay’s finance and analytics functions

Maintains budget-to-actual analysis by revenue class

Performs the month-end accounting close process (bank reconciliation, accruals, manage all sub ledgers for A/P and A/R0

Appraises the organization’s financial position and generates and presents monthly fiscal reports to the President & CEO and Board Finance Committee

         o Including: Revenue and expense, cash position and variances against budget

Meets quarterly with the Board and discusses any Finance-related matters

Prepares annual budget and multi-year strategic plan financial data in coordination with CEO, Board Chair and Board Finance Committee

● Reviews overall accounting/financial information to challenge budget and actual amounts with team

● Updates budget/forecast, as needed, quarterly

Formulates, recommends, and implements sound fiscal policies, procedures, and accounting controls

Ensures adherence to internal fiscal quality control systems throughout the agency (an internal audit, efficiency role)

Assists with the resolution of all issues, disputes and requests involving tax and reporting issues with the IRS

Additional financial analyses and hands-on bookkeeping duties as necessary


Works with the President & CEO and Development & Database Coordinator to ensure that fiscal requirements for grants and contracts are identified, realized, and monitored

● Provides guidance to the Development staff in the preparation of periodic reports to funding sources

Oversees the reporting of outstanding funding receivables, on a grant-by-grant basis

Supervises the monitoring of all contracts to ensure compliance with fiscal and programmatic reporting


Works closely with auditors and the Board Audit Committee on completion of the annual, agency-wide audit

Prepares supporting schedules as necessary


● 8+ years of finance and/or accounting experience

Knowledge of QuickBooks

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate technical budget and financial information to the Board and PowerPlay NYC staff

Self-starter, ability to work independently

● CPA (a plus)

Not-for-profit experience (a plus)


● Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of experience: o Bookkeeping (journal entries, monthly close) 3 years

          o Budgeting – 3 years

          o Presenting to and interacting with Board of Directors – 2 years

          o Accounting & Finance – 8 years

          o Not-for-profit – 2 years


While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in an open-plan office
